PLACES TO SERVE & VOLUNTEER

We believe that God gave each of us unique gifts and talents, and that He intended for us to use these gifts to be a blessing to others and to build a healthy church. Here you'll find a variety of ways to serve in leadership and/or as part of a support team. Whether you have a little or a lot of time to give, there is a place for you to serve!

Sunday Message Team  Assist in the duplication and mailing of our Sunday sermons.  Training provided.  For more information contact Callie Spencer at 678-684-6000.

Finance Volunteer  Provide support to our finance department and church administrator.  Requires bookkeeping or financial background. 

Sunday Morning Counter - Assist a Finance Committee member one Sunday a month in counting the weekly offering.  For more information contact Julie Polachek via email at 678-684-6001.

North Gwinnett Co-op  The co-op provides crisis assistance to people in our community and is accepting volunteers 13 and older on Mondays from 6 – 8PM,  Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 – Noon.  Help one time or on a regular basis bagging food, stocking shelves or working in the thrift store.  Client Intake Volunteers are also needed who will process client applications and assess client needs.  Training provided.  For more information contact Bonnie Flanagan via email at 770-237-3836.

Meals on Wheels  Delivery of  meals to Duluth homebound residents on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s each week. Meals are picked up at SUMC at 10AM and delivery takes no longer than 2 hours.  Volunteer one or more times per month. Training and Background checks required. Appalachia Service Project Team  Thursday, November 6 thru Sunday, November 9.  “ASP” is a ministry in the Appalachian mountain area whose purpose is to repair homes.  SUMC will send a team to Chavies, Kentucky. Season of Compassion  SUMC offers many ways to give and serve during the holidays.   We have everything from food and toy drives, Thanksgiving baskets, adult and children's holiday parties and much more. Small Group Facilitator/Class Leader  Create a positive learning environment so that class members have the opportunity to build friendships, be encouraged and grow spiritually.  One-time, short-term, long-term and ongoing group leaders needed.  Application required.  For application or more information contact the Mike Devine via email or 678-684-6005.

Book Store Volunteer  Staff the Bookstore on Sunday mornings between services helping people purchase books. For more information contact the Community Life Office via email at 678-684-6025.

Women's Ministry Team Member  Plan and promote ministries for women including annual Retreat and fellowship events.  For more information contact Karen Foyle via email.  

Men's Ministry Team Member  Plan and promote ministries for men including annual retreat, fellowship events and service projects.  For more information contact Randy Redner via email.

The Good Life Ministry Team Member  Plan and promote ministries for single and married people in their 20s and 30s including monthly socials, service projects, recreation and study group. For more information contact Josh and Robin Axelberd, 770-271-2381

Senior's Ministry Team  Member  Plan and promote monthly outings and ministries for our active senior’s group, Sugarloafers.  For more information contact Joyce Henry via email at 678-483-0543 or Kitty Francis at 770-682-9292.

Family Fun Night Team Member  Plan, promote and host family-fun events so that people have the opportunity to meet, build friendships and invite friends to an outreach event. For more information contact Kevin Clement via email.

Sports & Recreation Team Member  This team will help plan and coordinate our developing sports and recreation ministry for adults, families and children. For more information contact Kevin Clement via email.

Dinner at the Diner Team Member  This team hosts our Wednesday Night Dinners and needs team members to serve in a variety of roles including setting tables, collecting money, food prep and cook, baking desserts and kitchen clean up.  Work 2 - 4 hour shifts each month.  For more information contact the Chris Aker via email or 678-684-6025.

Alzheimer’s Support  We receive much information from the Alzheimer’s Association of Georgia.  We need a volunteer who could once a month come to the church and run copies of the materials to be shared with the group.  For more information contact Judy Malley 770-995-0777.

Care & Freezer Meals  Prepare and/or deliver meals to members of our church who have been hospitalized, had a death in the family or are experiencing other life difficulties.  For more information contact Ellen Tarulli, 678-475-1809.

Monday Night Prayer Team  Meet on Monday evenings at 6:00pm in the prayer room to pray over the requests received during Sunday morning worship services. For more information contact Jill Kleve at 770-995-4918.

Email Prayer Partner  This team receives prayer requests by way of, you guessed it, email.  You’ll simply access your email for requests and pray at your convenience.  For more information contact Terri Strawn at 678-684-6027.

Open the Eyes of Their Hearts  Receive via email a list of people needing salvation and pray for those individuals privately at your convenience.  For more information contact Marti Meuse via email.

Staff & Ministry Prayer Team  Meet Tuesdays at 10:00am in the prayer room to pray for our staff and the ministries of SUMC.  For more information contact Steve Beckmann at 678-417-7414.

Prayer Shawl Ministry  A ministry at SUMC for people who love to knit, crochet or quilt to produce shawls, prayer blankets and baby blankets.  Also looking for team members willing to do deliveries and locate resources.  For more information contact Christel Trulson at 770-814-2478.

Stephen Ministry  Offer one-on-one, confidential care giving to individuals who are experiencing all kinds of life needs from relocation to dealing with the loss of a  loved one.  To serve in this ministry, individuals must undergo an interview, a background check, complete a spiritual gifts survey, and 50 hours of training.  For more information contact Congregational Care Office at 678-684-6017.

Visitation Team   Provide care, comfort and prayer to members of our congregation through visitation at hospitals, homes, assisted nursing care facilities, hospices, and funerals.  One time training provided.  For more information contact the Congregational Care office at 678-684-6027. Nursery Volunteer  Nursery volunteers are asked to serve one hour every other month in one of our six nurseries.  Training provided!  For more information contact Debbie Bowers via email or 770-963-1181.

Check-in Counter  Assist parents with check-in, greet and guide newcomers in the SK area each Sunday morning.  Commitment: month to month.  For more information contact Phyllis Remke via email or  678714-0646.

BLAST Crew Leader  A crew leader’s job is to get to know a small group of elementary age children each week and develop relationships as you accompany their through BLAST workshops.  No preparation, no teaching – just lots of love!  Commitment: by semesters (August – December, January – May and/or May – August) Training provided!   For more information contact Jean Rector via email or 678-684-6058.

BLAST Workshop Leader  Workshop leaders commit to leading the same workshop at one service for an entire month to elementary age children.  Workshops include construction, art, drama, games, science, cooking, missions, computers, etc.  Commitment: just 4 Sunday’s a year!  Training provided! Preschool Leader  A Preschool leader gets to build relationships with a small group of preschool children during the 9:30am or 11:00am hour each Sunday morning.  No prep work is required although you will lead your group through games and/or crafts as your explore the Lil’ K curriculum series.    Commitment: by semesters (August – December, January – May and/or May – August) Training provided!  For more information contact Jean Rector via email or 678-684-6058.

BRIDGE Wednesday Night Stars  Lead a group of children in games, crafts and Bible stories for an hour and a half on our wild & wacky Wednesday nights or help at the counter and greet parents and kids as they come in.  Curriculum and training provided. BLAST Worship Team  The worship team puts together an awesome experience for our kids every Sunday morning for BLAST.  This is the place for those of you who are dramatically, musically and technically inclined.  Commitment: On-Going.  Training and regular meetings provided!  For more information contact Toni Genovese via email or 678-684-6023.

Behind the Scenes Team  Shop for or help organize our BLAST workshop materials.  Commitment: a few hours each month.  For more information contact Trish Gomrick via email  or 678-684-6058.

Parking Team  Direct traffic flow, assist in finding parking for newcomers and guests with special needs.  Serve one Sunday a month on a team. For more information contact Bev Manson via email.

Door Greeters  Give a warm and friendly welcome to all who enter our doors and direct newcomers to the Worship Center and Guest Services. Serve one Sunday a month before either service.  For more information contact Ben Thornton via email.

Guest Services Hosts  Welcome newcomers, answers questions, distribute maps, class schedules and event information.  Serve one Sunday a month, before either service.  For more informatin contact Bev Manson via email.

Connections Café Hosts  Brew complimentary coffee and welcome everyone with a cup and a smile. Serve one Sunday a month before either service, or on the clean up team.  For more information contact Janet Barbrow via email or Connie Dunlap.

Volunteer Leader   Invest in the lives of middle school or high school students by serving as a volunteer leader in our weekly program.  Background check and interview required.  For more information contact Aaron Young via email or 678-684-6003.

Office Volunteer  Provide periodic help in the office with such things as mailings, phone calls, etc.  For more information contact Aaron Young via email or 678-684-6003.

Pumpkin Patch Volunteer  Each October we hold a special fundraiser for our summer mission trips called the Pumpkin Patch.  We could use help setting up the Pumpkin Patch, unloading pumpkins when they are delivered, and running the Patch.  For more information contact Aaron Young via email or 678-684-6003.

Handyman  Periodically during the year we are in need of handymen or handywomen to help us fix broken items in the Student Life Center OR to help us with special projects that we either don’t have the tools to do or don’t have the skill to do.  For more information contact Aaron Young via email or 678-684-6003.

Special Event Volunteer  Help with special events such as the Confirmation Dinner or the 30 Hour Famine.   For more information contact Aaron Young via email or 678-684-6003.

Sugarloaf Choir Member  Lead worship regularly on Sunday mornings and minister through various outreach productions, concerts, and other special events.  Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30pm.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Sugarloaf Singer  As a member of a small ensemble, lead Sunday’s congregational worship as well as other worship occasions.  Audition required.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Sugarloaf Band   As a member of our contemporary band, assist the worship leader regularly on Sunday mornings.  Also minister through various outreach productions, concerts, and other special events.  Audition required. For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Private Lesson Instructor Skilled teacher who gives private instruction through SUMC in their area of expertise.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Production Team - Sound   Assist worship leader with sound reinforcement during worship services, run sound board, place microphones before services and put away after services.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Production Team - Visual  Assist worship leader with visual presentation support during worship services, build and display graphics with song lyrics and message notes.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Production Team - Lighting  Operate lighting control console to highlight various actions of the worship service to enhance the atmosphere.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Production Team – Camera Operator  Utilize cameras to enhance the video aspect of the worship service, work with the director on shots throughout the worship service.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Drama Team Performer  Perform short skits with a spiritual message during worship and holiday dramas.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Drama - Support  Assist drama team productions with set design, props, costume-making, and make-up. For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.
 
Narrator  Assist worship leaders by providing narratives during Sunday services and special worship activities, including narratives in choir arrangements and dramas.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Altar Guild Member   Maintain altar area, coordinate seasonal decorations, communion preparation, and flower calendar.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.

Usher  Provide support for worship service, distribute order of worship, direct people to seating, assist in collecting the offering and counting attendance, straighten up sanctuary after services. For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.
 
Administrative Support   Catalog and maintain music inventory, organize practice and performance music, maintain choir membership data, assist with other administrative tasks.  For more information contact Kendra Marzen via email or 678-684-6006.
